Why roofs turn black
The dark streaks on Long Island roofs are a living algae, Gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and spreads across the roof over time. Moss and lichen follow in shady spots and hold moisture against the roof.
Left alone, growth shortens the life of a roof. Cleaning it is far cheaper than replacing shingles early.
Why we never pressure wash a roof
High pressure strips the protective granules off shingles and can force water under them. It may look clean for a day, but it ages the roof.
Our soft wash kills the growth at the root with low pressure. The roof looks much better the day we finish, and keeps improving as rain rinses away what's left over the next few weeks.
